English translation: Control was imposed on Greece in the most oppressive forms at the German Reich’s instigation, and its mitigation is the apparent purpose of the book.
The review then moves through public finances, agriculture, nascent industry, trade, and shipping. Agrarian reform in Macedonia and Thessaly links recovery to converting large estates inherited from Ottoman rule and operated under tenant cultivation into small peasant holdings. Its closing sentence shifts from domestic restructuring to regional cooperation:
Die Zukunft sieht Verf. in der handelspolitischen Annäherung der Balkanstaaten aneinander mit dem Endziele einer Zollunion.
English translation: The author sees the future in the Balkan states drawing closer together in trade policy, with a customs union as the ultimate goal.
Schwiedland thus foregrounds the connection between external constraint, agrarian change, and commercial integration, without independently testing Tsouderos’s programme.
