Helene Lieser on Price’s Economic Dictionary (1927)

Helene Lieser’s short review evaluates the English–German first part of Hereward T. Price’s specialist economic dictionary. Her endorsement rests explicitly on spot checks, not an exhaustive assessment:

Auf Grund der vorgenommenen Stichproben scheint die Durchführung ebenso gut wie die Idee zu sein.

English translation: On the basis of the spot checks undertaken, the execution seems as good as the idea.

She singles out a feature that makes the dictionary valuable beyond word substitution:

Besonders angenehm sind die Literaturnachweisungen, die wohl ein Novum in einem Lexikon darstellen.

English translation: Particularly welcome are the bibliographical references, which probably represent a novelty in a dictionary.

The review then shifts from approval to precise revision proposals. Lieser recommends adding gaming act, compulsory liquidation, and casting vote, and questions the renderings of political arithmetic and bucket shops. She distinguishes these substantive translation problems from the probable misprint in the entry for efficiency of labour. Her compact intervention treats specialist lexicography as requiring both useful coverage and conceptual accuracy: praise for the project does not exempt individual equivalents from scrutiny.
