About this work

Alexander Mahr, Vorbemerkung (1956)

Alexander Mahr’s editorial notice announces a transition in the leadership of the Zeitschrift für Nationalökonomie after the death of its founder and longtime editor, Hans Mayer. It connects commemoration with editorial appointments and publication plans, presenting institutional renewal as a means of sustaining the journal’s scholarly purposes.

Seine großen Verdienste um den Fortschritt und die Vertiefung der Wirtschaftstheorie werden in der folgenden Würdigung seines wissenschaftlichen Wirkens dargestellt.

English translation: His great contributions to the advancement and deepening of economic theory are presented in the following appreciation of his scholarly work.

This sentence assigns the substantive assessment of Mayer’s achievements to the appreciation that follows. Mahr’s own notice concentrates on the journal’s future. The distinction allows remembrance to frame the change of leadership without making the notice itself an extended intellectual biography.

As the new editor, Mahr announces that Gottfried Haberler of Harvard and Oskar Morgenstern of Princeton have agreed to become foreign co-editors. Their appointments draw on existing connections with the journal. Morgenstern’s earlier editorial service is especially significant: Mahr credits him with contributing to its scholarly reputation and international circulation. These links give the transition both historical continuity and an outward-looking purpose.

Von diesen beiden neuen Mitgliedern des Herausgeberkollegiums ist gewiß auch ein vertiefter Kontakt mit der anglo-amerikanischen Wirtschaftswissenschaft zu erhoffen.

English translation: A closer connection with Anglo-American economics can certainly also be hoped for from these two new members of the editorial board.

The formulation expresses an expectation rather than an accomplished result. The appointments are intended to strengthen scholarly exchange, within a broader effort to restore international cooperation disrupted by political developments and especially the Second World War. Mahr treats that cooperation as a productive feature of the journal’s earlier history whose conditions must now be recovered.

The notice also distinguishes the editorial board from the practical management of journal contents. Following Karl Heinz Werner’s departure, Wilhelm Weber and Josef Sznahovich assume editorial duties, with Weber principally responsible for research articles and Sznahovich for reviews. Renewal therefore entails a concrete division of work as well as international recruitment.

Publication plans reinforce this combination of continuity and reconstruction. The present double issue opens volume XVI, with another planned for late autumn. Volume XV is to be completed through a third issue reprinting foundational articles that have long been unavailable, together with an index covering volumes I–XV. The journal’s future is thus linked to renewed access to its accumulated intellectual record.
