Emil Lederer · 1920
This brief official commission speaking turn records Lederer’s exchange with Rathenau about legal obligation. Lederer asks who imposes it; Rathenau answers that the law does. Lederer distinguishes that answer from the point under discussion:
Das bezieht sich auf einen anderen Punkt. Durch das Gesetz wird er verpflichtet, diejenigen Abschreibungen vorzunehmen, welche im Zentralsyndikat anerkannt werden.
English translation: That concerns a different point. The law obliges him to make those depreciation charges which are recognized by the central syndicate.
The intervention separates legal compulsion from the central syndicate’s recognition of depreciation charges. Its significance lies in clarifying institutional responsibilities; the excerpt does not identify the obligated person or establish Lederer’s broader position on coal-industry organization.
