About this work

Emil Lederer: Intervention on Coal Mining (1920)

This recorded commission speaking turn concerns the composition of the Reich Coal Council. Lederer rejects Professor Lindemann’s position by distinguishing Rathenau’s proposal from the proposal he supports:

Lederer: Ich würde mich Herrn Professor Lindemann nicht anschließen können, weil der Reichskohlenrat nach dem Vorschlag Rathenau innerlich anders zusammengesetzt ist als nach unserm Vorschlag, weil dort noch Unternehmer darin sind.

English translation: Lederer: I could not agree with Professor Lindemann, because under Rathenau’s proposal the Reich Coal Council has a different internal composition than under our proposal, because entrepreneurs are still included in it there.

The decisive difference is the continued presence of entrepreneurs under Rathenau’s scheme. Lederer thus makes institutional membership the basis of his objection. The brief intervention establishes this disagreement but does not explain the alternative council’s full composition or the preceding argument.
