He tentatively explains this imbalance through the division of labor between written outline and oral instruction: theoretical exposition was probably left chiefly to the lecturer. His praise thus concerns the handbook’s usefulness within a teaching practice, rather than theoretical completeness. Finally, he treats the rapid appearance of an enlarged second edition in early 1892, following public release in autumn 1891, as evidence of its merit and practical utility.
