Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk: Review of Richard Schüller’s Die classische Nationalökonomie und ihre Gegner (1896)

Böhm-Bawerk’s review endorses Schüller’s reassessment of classical political economy as a correction to the inherited picture disseminated by the historical school. Its central concern is how scholarly reputations become detached from original texts: even influential works cease to be read directly, while compressed accounts of their doctrines acquire authority through repetition.

The notion of the Schablone—a reductive interpretive template—organizes the review. Böhm-Bawerk first invokes popular distortions of Darwin, then turns to Smith’s treatment of mercantilism. Later generations largely encountered mercantilist doctrine through Smith’s critical characterization; renewed reading of the original authors revealed that they did not uniformly identify national wealth with money. The point is not merely that summaries omit detail, but that an opponent’s selection of defining traits can become the accepted identity of an entire school.

This reversal connects the review’s opening reflection to Schüller’s contribution. Böhm-Bawerk argues that the historical school constructed its portrait of classical economics around its own methodological and political differences. Its emphasis on local, temporal, and individual variation encouraged the accusation that the classics ignored such differences, recognized only egoistic motives, and overlooked conflicts of interest. Its support for vigorous state action likewise encouraged a picture of the classics as unconditional opponents of intervention, insensitive to the dependence of policy on circumstances.

Against this inherited account, Schüller’s achievement is evidentiary. Building on research by Karl Menger, he examines Smith, Say, Ricardo, and Malthus against the familiar accusations and supplies authentic citations. Böhm-Bawerk finds the resulting demonstration convincing: the classics acknowledged historical and cultural differences, motives competing with self-interest, and antagonisms of interest. They also understood the contextual appropriateness of economic measures and did not reject state intervention as absolutely as later accounts suggested. The review thus defends the complexity of classical thought without attempting to establish the truth of every classical doctrine.

Böhm-Bawerk closes by distinguishing Schüller’s substantive achievement from his polemical manner. He excuses the sharp attacks on historical economists as youthful zeal, while firmly endorsing the corrective value of the research.

Sachlich hat er mit seiner Schrift zweifellos der Wissenschaft einen wertvollen Dienst geleistet, und ich bin überzeugt, dass dieselbe zur Correctur der landläufigen, aber trotz ihrer Landläufigkeit keineswegs sehr zutreffenden Anschauungen über die classische Nationalökonomie nicht wenig beitragen wird.

English translation: In substance he has without doubt rendered science a valuable service with his treatise, and I am convinced that it will contribute not a little to the correction of the current, but despite their currency by no means very accurate, views concerning classical political economy.
