Thurnwald’s encyclopedic article treats technology through comparative ethnography directed toward prehistoric research. Its twenty sections move from conceptual and methodological problems to an extended examination of pottery, followed by metallurgy, woodworking, trapping, fire-making, weaving, navigation, weapons, and fortifications. Technology encompasses inherited knowledge, bodily skills, and manufacturing procedures as well as objects. Its significance lies in the reciprocal relationship between invention and the social conditions that technical changes help create.

English translation: The entire plan of life of a society rests upon the inherited skills of making plant and animal, rock and climate serviceable to its own existence.

Technical accumulation proceeds unevenly because societies must adapt institutionally and psychologically to innovations. Changes in subsistence support denser settlement, political domination, and occupational specialization, with consequences beyond inventors’ intentions. Yet technology is not an autonomous cause: migration, warfare, marriage, exchange, and stratification also reshape technical repertoires. Thurnwald distinguishes generalized “cultural horizons,” linking technical conditions with social and intellectual life, from historically specific “cultural spheres” formed through interactions among populations, technologies, and environments.

His cumulative conception of development accommodates divergence, deterioration, and loss. Skills may disappear with specialist families or become unnecessary after relocation. Archaeological interpretation must therefore distinguish invention, transmission, convergence, and adaptation rather than infer historical relationships from resemblance alone. Function, material, construction, handling, production sequences, and the social identity of makers all matter.

English translation: An object may have been invented in one region, yet live on in another.

This distinction between origin and survival limits what geographical distribution can establish. An object’s presence need not indicate local manufacture, while its persistence elsewhere may obscure its original setting. Elementary techniques can also arise independently under comparable practical conditions.

Drawing extensively on Nordenskiöld’s South American research, Thurnwald describes innovation through incremental modification, substitution of materials, and the transfer or recombination of operations. Contact creates opportunities without determining what a society adopts.

English translation: In addition, every cultural system makes only a selection among the foreign cultural elements offered to it, the skills and knowledge of other tribes, choosing only what is suited to completing its own system.

Selective adoption connects technical history to everyday social organization. Pottery provides the most sustained demonstration. Thurnwald considers alternatives to ceramic vessels, forming and coiling, paddle-and-anvil techniques, molds, rotary supports, and firing. Mobile populations may prefer durable baskets, while established potters may find the wheel unnecessary. Trade and itinerant manufacture complicate distribution maps. The transition from predominantly female domestic pottery to male professional production is related to tribute, urban concentration, and intensified household labor, not merely to improved equipment. Standardization can increase production while reducing artistic individuality.

Ritual likewise belongs within the analysis of technical practice. Elaborate crafts may produce additional magical precautions rather than eliminate them. Pottery prohibitions and Māori weaving initiations organize concentration, memory, confidence, and instruction. Thurnwald thus questions an observer’s easy separation of effective operations from supposedly extraneous beliefs.

The later studies broaden this approach beyond manufacture. Micronesian navigation joins astronomical observation, remembered courses, teaching devices, and contingency routes, demonstrating sophisticated knowledge exercised with limited equipment. Weapons require attention to performance and handling as well as diffusion, poison preparation, and associated beliefs. Merely recording the presence of a bow misses how it is used and understood. Māori fortifications connect defensive construction with family organization, food storage, water supply, and access to productive land: they remain inhabited settlements, not isolated military structures.

The article interprets material culture as practiced, transmitted, and socially organized activity. Its hierarchical terminology and speculative diffusion histories retain assumptions of contemporary ethnology, but its strongest analyses resist treating societies as inventories of detached traits. Ethnography supplies prehistoric research with possible procedures and relationships that surviving artifacts alone cannot reveal. Inherited technical achievements both enlarge human capacities and generate new dependencies and demands for adaptation.
