About this work

Hermann von Schullern zu Schrattenhofen: Review of E. Masè-Dari (1893)

After recalling the economist’s earlier work on intensive cultivation and land rent, it identifies the lecture’s governing premise:

English translation: Masè-Dari recognizes in landed property the fundamental phenomenon of the economy and of the whole of social development.

Schullern contrasts this position with an economics that places human beings at its centre. Making landed property foundational, he suggests, opens important new perspectives on private ownership of land. The review then locates Masè-Dari’s argument in relation to Loria:

English translation: The author singles out Loria's doctrine in particular with fiery praise.

This enthusiasm does not preclude criticism: Masè-Dari questions Loria’s treatment and extends his scrutiny to competing approaches. Schullern reads the lecture’s conclusion as promising a more satisfactory resolution of human claims to landed property than those offered by the classical and “heterodox” schools or, especially, the socialists. He reports that ambition without supplying a solution absent from the lecture.

English translation: The little writing will form an introduction that arouses suspense for the work which the author, as we will hope with him, is still to bestow upon us.

The closing hope makes the assessment provisional. The lecture’s significance lies in its conceptual reorientation of the property question and the research it promises, rather than in a reform programme the review can already evaluate.
