Schullern’s brief German review of Materialismo storico ed economia Marxistica presents Croce’s six previously published essays as an effort to extract Marx’s realistic intellectual core from metaphysical ornament and his followers’ incautious deductions. Its movement is bibliographical, then evaluative: it maps the essays before distinguishing Croce’s analytical merit from his polemical manner.

Schullern’s principal reservation concerns the unusually hostile treatment of Loria, which he judges unfavourably from an explicitly German, present-day standpoint. This objection does not overturn his recognition of Croce’s acuity and Italian reception:
Im übrigen zeigen die, nebenbei bemerkt, bei italienischen Autoren viel citierten Abhandlungen Croce's durchaus großen Scharfsinn; sie verdienen daher, unter dem berücksichtigenswerten Teile der Marx-Litteratur erwähnt zu werden.
English translation: For the rest, Croce's treatises, which, be it remarked in passing, are much cited by Italian authors, display throughout great acumen; they therefore deserve to be mentioned among that part of the Marx literature which is worthy of consideration.
The review’s significance lies in this qualified recommendation: Croce merits attention within Marx scholarship despite a polemical excess that Schullern finds objectionable.
