Hermann von Schullern zu Schrattenhofen’s 1911 review of Giuseppe Goria’s La cooperazione di classe tra i lavoratori in Italia (1909) commends an empirically grounded account of Italian workers’ cooperation. It opens with Luigi Luzzatti’s preface, endorsing its appeal to social progress against both revolutionary and conservative hypocrisy.
Schullern traces Goria’s movement from workers’ associations organized to resist employers toward economic associations: labourers’ cooperatives, cooperative tenancies, and industrial producer, consumer, credit, and other cooperatives. This sequence distinguishes defensive organization from cooperative economic activity without claiming that the former must disappear.

English translation: The attitude of Catholicism and of socialism toward the cooperative movement is discussed in the third part.
The third part places cooperation in relation to Catholicism and socialism. Schullern identifies this ideological dimension but does not report Goria’s conclusions. His own verdict rests principally on the book’s documentary substance:

The closing praise for its careful historical treatment of workers’ cooperatives, both generally and in their particular forms, clarifies the review’s criterion of value: factual abundance joined to attention to institutional development.
