Lederer’s brief review assesses Hirschberg’s monographic study of the German sculptors’ union through a distinction between occupational description and analysis of union organization. His opening judgment establishes the study’s limited ambition:
Eine ganz anspruchslose Schilderung der Zustände im Deutschen Bildhauergewerbe, ohne tieferes Eingehen in die Probleme der Gewerkschaftsorganisation.
English translation: A quite unpretentious depiction of the conditions in the German sculptors' trade, without any deeper entry into the problems of trade-union organisation.
Lederer nevertheless singles out the wage figures as noteworthy: in some branches, weekly earnings reach 60, 65, or even 80 marks alongside working hours as low as seven hours. He tentatively attributes these high wages to the work’s substantial skill requirements. This concession recognizes the study’s empirical value without treating its figures as an explanation of union development.
The review closes by making its critical standard explicit:
Die Daten über die Gewerkschaft selbst bieten kein besonderes Interesse — der Zusammenhang mit der übrigen Gewerkschaftsbewegung ist nicht erörtert.
English translation: The data about the union itself offer no particular interest — the connection with the rest of the trade-union movement is not discussed.
Moving from general appraisal through one striking empirical observation to a final methodological objection, Lederer suggests that a union monograph gains analytical significance by relating its particular organization to the wider labor movement. The review’s relevance lies in that demand for contextual explanation beyond descriptive occupational data.
