Emil Lederer: Review of Der Kampf in B.-Rheinfelden and Die Differenzen zwischen der badischen Fabrik-Inspektion und den christlichen Gewerkschaften (1910)

Lederer’s brief review lists two publications concerning Christian trade unions, but its substantive discussion focuses on the first: an account of the aluminium-workers’ strike at Badisch-Rheinfelden, which lasted from 22 July to 15 August 1909. He explains that subsequent disputes with the intervening regional commissioner and Social Democratic newspapers prompted its publication. The second pamphlet receives no separate analysis.

Lederer moves quickly from the occasion of publication to the strike’s broader significance:

Interessant für den Außenstehenden ist nur, daß die Form und Energie des Kampfes, die Taktik während desselben mit dem von den freien Gewerkschaften geübten Verfahren vollkommen übereinstimmt: der Klassenkampf hat, bei gleichen Vorbedingungen, unabhängig von der speziellen Parteirichtung, dieselben Formen.

English translation: What is interesting for the outsider is only that the form and energy of the struggle, and the tactics employed during it, agree completely with the procedure practised by the free trade unions: the class struggle has, given the same preconditions, the same forms, independently of the particular party orientation.

The comparison shifts attention from partisan controversy to the conditions shaping collective action. Christian unionists’ tactics, he argues, coincide with those of the free trade unions despite their differing political affiliations. The qualification “bei gleichen Vorbedingungen” is decisive: his claim concerns convergence under comparable conditions, not an unconditional identity among unions. The review’s conceptual force lies in treating class struggle as a practical dynamic whose forms cannot be explained by party orientation alone.
