Eugen Peter Schwiedland · 1922
Eugen Peter Schwiedland’s 1922 review of Edwin Cannan’s The Paper Pound of 1797–1921 welcomes the republication of the Bullion Report and praises Cannan’s historical-theoretical framing:
Diese Schrift ist ein Neudruck des „Bullion Report“ sowie eine in der sprühenden Art des Verf. gehaltene dankenswerte historisch-theoretische Einleitung.
English translation: This work is a reprint of the "Bullion Report" together with a welcome historical-theoretical introduction written in the author's sparkling manner.
The appreciation concerns both the introduction’s intellectual usefulness and its lively presentation. Schwiedland then foregrounds a practical monetary conclusion: reducing the paper-money supply, rather than blaming wartime profiteers, should restore purchasing power and enable the acquisition of gold. The brief review thus connects historical monetary debate to a pointed policy recommendation without developing its theoretical premises at length.
