About this work

Emil Lederer’s review of Wirtschaftliches Arbeitnehmer-Taschenbuch (1922)

Lederer’s brief review assesses the first volume of the handbook in its third edition (Stuttgart, 1921). Its central judgment concerns practical usefulness: the book offers broad audiences an initial orientation in economic, legal, and political matters.

English translation: This handbook is a comparatively very serviceable aid for wider circles in gaining a preliminary orientation on a number of general questions (e.g. the peace treaty, finances, legal regulations, currency).

The qualification “vorläufig” distinguishes introductory guidance from fuller treatment. Lederer finds greater detail in the accounts of economic organizations, works councils, and socialization. He then maps sections on German parties, their history and ideology, work and labor law, education, and further economic and political issues.

English translation: The very skillfully compiled little volume unites in itself contributions by good authorities on the individual fields and is objectively framed in all its contributions.

Expertise, skillful compilation, and objectivity ground his recommendation. The review values the handbook as a compact instrument of public information: its achievement lies in making varied fields accessible, with sufficient differentiation of depth to serve readers seeking orientation.
