Emil Lederer: Review of Deutsches Zeitungsarchiv (1912)

Emil Lederer’s short review assesses a new press-digest enterprise as a potential infrastructure for research. The Deutsches Zeitungsarchiv proposed to publish systematic extracts from 93 German-language daily newspapers, including papers from Austria, Switzerland, and further abroad. Its initial concentration on economics reflected an underestimation of the material’s volume, rather than the full scope of its ambitions. Lederer identifies the premise behind the undertaking:

Es geht von dem Gedanken aus, daß die Tagespresse eine Fülle von Material enthält, das über das Tagesinteresse hinausreicht, und von erheblicher Bedeutung für die politische, soziale, wirtschaftliche und kulturgeschichtliche Information ist.

English translation: It proceeds from the thought that the daily press contains an abundance of material which reaches beyond the interest of the day and is of considerable significance for political, social, economic and cultural-historical information.

The review moves from description to qualified appraisal and finally to a broader archival prospect. Lederer surveys seven subject groups covering economic theory and history, production, agriculture, commerce, finance, economic organizations, and property and related institutions. Daily and monthly editions offered different levels of access, but the relatively high subscription prices made broad circulation unlikely. His central methodological reservation concerns whether compressed information can substitute for the evidence it summarizes:

Auch fragt es sich, ob die Auszüge in allen Fällen (bei der notwendigen Knappheit der Notizen) die Benützung der betreffenden Artikel ersetzen können — insbesondere ist das für wissenschaftliche Arbeiten fraglich.

English translation: It is also questionable whether the excerpts can in all cases (given the necessary brevity of the notices) replace the use of the articles in question — this is questionable in particular for scholarly works.

The service’s provision of original articles or transcriptions partly answers this objection. For Lederer, the archive’s value therefore depends not simply on collecting newspaper content, but on the quality of its extracts and the possibility of returning to their sources. He regards it as a promising beginning whose durability remains contingent on execution.

His concluding proposal extends beyond daily newspapers to specialist and interest-group periodicals, which he considers still more important for scholarly work and which often supply the newspapers themselves:

Einer späteren Zukunft erst muß es wohl vorbehalten bleiben, den Umfang der hier verarbeiteten Organe noch weiter zu stecken, insbesondere die Fach- und Interessentenblätter — aus welchen ja die Tageszeitungen vielfach schöpfen, und welche für die wissenschaftliche Verarbeitung noch viel wichtiger sind — heranzuziehen und sie in einem Archiv geordnet allgemeinerer Benutzung zugänglich zu machen.

English translation: It must presumably remain reserved to a later future to set the compass of the organs worked up here still wider, in particular to draw in the trade and interest-group papers — from which the daily newspapers indeed frequently draw, and which are far more important for scholarly treatment — and to make them accessible in an ordered archive to more general use.

The review’s distinctive move is to judge a commercial digest by its capacity to become an organized, generally accessible research archive. Its relevance lies in this distinction between convenient summaries and durable scholarly access: preserving the press’s value beyond immediate politics requires both systematic selection and access to the underlying documents.
